RTP Co. has introduced a series of electrically conductive thermoplastic elastomer compounds based on thermoplastic vulcanizates.
The ESD C2800B series combines the performance and properties of thermoset rubbers with the processing ease of injection moldable thermoplastics, according to the Winona, Minn., company. The new grades have Shore A hardness as low as 55, making them candidates to replace rubber, according to the company.
Unlike conventional TPEs, in which conductive additives raise the modulus and viscosity of a compound, the new materials achieve conductivity while providing flexibility and elastomeric feel, combined with high tear strength, the company said.
And unlike rubber, the new compounds can be proc¼essed by thermoplastic injection molding, providing design freedom. ESD C2800B compounds are designed to be drop-in replacements for end uses in which electrostatic protection is combined with TPE properties.
