Design firm Gizmo Packaging Ltd. has invented a new polypropylene screw-top closure with a pressurized insert that, when opened by a turn of the cap, drives a jet of additive into the container, delivering dye, fragrance, vitamin supplements or flavoring into the base liquid.
The Gizmo closure can be incorporated into plastic and glass bottles with still or carbonated base liquids. It also can be combined with hand pumps or trigger sprayers. It's geared toward the food and beverage, dairy, pharmaceutical, personal-care, household, horticulture and agriculture and cleaning markets.
The Renfrew-based company, founded in 2001 by British inventor Bernard Frutin, began marketing the plastic closure in April 2008 in Europe. In addition to freshness, Gizmo touts the closure's ability to provide accurate dosing of additives, product protection and longer shelf life.
RPC Bramlage-Wiko has signed on to oversee manufacturing of the closure. RPC Bramlage is a division of Higham Ferrers, England-based RPC Group plc, Europe's leading rigid plastics packaging manufacturer.
RPC Bramlage's plant in Lohne, Germany, is injection molding the closure. Oystar Aerofill Dawson Ltd. of Suffolk, England, is marketing filling, pressurizing and sterilization equipment for the Gizmo.
