Working with technology partners, Oima SpA has developed a production system for in-mold labeling of injection molded ice cream containers and lids, for an unidentified Italian ice cream maker.
The line manufactures the containers and lids simultaneously. The lids, in four sizes, have a cycle time of about six seconds, or up to 600 ice cream containers an hour.
The core is an Oima Stratos KP injection press with a clamping force of 300 tons. A special hot-runner plate, with feeding and balancing features, couples two different molds together, to make a two-cavity mold. The same mold can be quickly converted to produce different sizes of boxes and lids, or two boxes or two lids.
An IML automation system uses a side-entry robot to position the labels in the mold, then pivots to remove molded parts. The labels are electrostatically charged, so they remain the correct position.
Oima is based in Treviso.
