Brown Machinery LLC has been awarded a patent for its single-roller screw design, for actuation of independent third-platen, plug-assist motion.
Brown makes thermoforming machinery in Beaverton, Mich.
The plug system is driven by a single-roller screw, driven by a servo motor. The platen is guided by eight linear bearings, incorporating quick-change cylinder locks for attachment to the tooling plug plate.
The patented technology provides higher stiffness, great load capacity and longer, more dependable operation for continuous thermoformers that require third-motion applications, according to Brown.
Brown has incorporated the design in all Brown CS and SRS thermoforming machines with third-motion capabilities.
Other advances of the roller screw include:
c Rollers are made with the same threat angle as the nut, ideal for high-load, high-speed applications.
c Fixed screws allow the roller screw to work at higher revolutions per minute than ball screws.
c Roller screws can give a much longer service life, with higher load capacity and multiple contact points.
