Plastic Flow software simulates extrusion
Plastic Flow LLC has released a new software package to simulate polymer extrusion, called polyXtrue.
The software is useful for extrusion die designers, with a module for design of coextrusion and monoextrusion.
President Mahesh Gupta said the complex geometry of the coextrusion feed block has slowed the coextrusion market. But polyXtrue is based on a full, three-dimensional simulation of the polymer flow, made possible by a newly developed computer technology called mesh partitioning. This simulates coextrusion without changing the finite element mesh as the shapes of different polymers change during the simulation.
Another reason for the high level of accuracy is the variational principle to enforce a condition of no cross-flows on the interface surface between adjacent polymer layers, Gupta said.

Schenck AccuRate said its FulFiller container-loading system can quickly load granulator or pellet products at rates up to 8,475 cubic feet per hour.
The high-speed belt loader is designed to throw material, rather than convey it, the full length of either a 20-foot-long or 40-foot-long lined container. The throwing action does not damage the material, according to the company in Whitewater, Wis.
The FulFiller comes in three models, including one that can be moved by a forklift and others for use in unloading silos.

Guill Tool die design
Guill Tool & Engineering Co. Inc. said its Series 819 EZ is a low-volume MediFlow extrusion die designed for fast and easy cleaning. It is specifically engineered for use in the extruding of medical tubing as fine as a single human hair, for arthroscopic surgery.
In this very small tubing, residue left in the chamber can cause stopped production because cleaning and reassembling the die is complex.
A two-stage bolt system sports a FeatherTouch adjustment. Removal of the die holder offers quick and total cleaning of the body and diverters. After cleaning the die, only one part has to be put back in place to reassemble the die.

Quick Strip reduces
D-M-E Co. said its Quick Strip is the newest innovation in mold-making part ejection.
Quick Strip is a global, standardized product that significantly reduces mold construction time and costs. It eliminates the need for ejector plates and pins, risers and clamping plates, resulting in lower part costs, machining and maintenance.
With no ejector pin holes as obstacles, cooling systems also can be optimized, leading to faster cycle times.
A German mold maker developed the part-ejection technology, looking for ways to be more competitive.
D-M-E, part of Cincinnati-based Milacron Inc., introduced Quick Strip at last year's Fakuma show in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

Rofin-Sinar Laser GmbH said its Integral laser-welding machine features the new ``sweet spot'' generation technology.
The large working chamber has space for parts up to 500 millimeters wide. Work pieces are positioned using an ``xy'' table with a ``z'' axis. A patented optical system can be swiveled around two axes, to allow the welder to process vertical surfaces, undercuts or deep grooves without swiveling or tilting the work piece.
The sweet spot technology replaces traditional two-lamp resonators with a single lamp, using a new generation of lighting with much longer life.
For polymer welding, a compact series of fiber-coupled diode laser systems are air cooled.
Rofin-Sinar also has introduced the CombiLine Flexible series of low-cost laser-marking equipment. All supply units and operating panels are integrated into the machine housing.
