Wittmann Inc. has introduced a robot for in-mold labeling, based on the new W717 robot, designed for injection molding machines with clamping forces ranging from 90-275 tons, and molding cycles of five seconds or longer.
Wittmann of Torrington, Conn., said the IML system offers high efficiency and low capital cost.
The robot automatically inserts labels into one- and two-cavity molds, and allows the free drop of the finished parts.
The W717 robot features a fixed kick-stroke frame, to prevent any interference with hoppers and blenders on small injection presses. The robot is equipped with a servo-driven vertical arm for a stroke of up to 47.2 inches. The horizontal axis can be manually adjusted to slide the entire robot to the side for mold changes, or to compensate for any changes in positioning after a mold change. The pneumatically driven kick-stroke can be adjusted for different mold thicknesses.
The label magazine is mounted on the kick-stroke frame. The end-plate of the label magazine is spring-loaded for consistent pressure, and positive pickup by the end-of-arm tooling. The EOAT houses the electrostatic charger that applies the charge to the labels before they are put into the mold.
The maximum label dimension is 8 inches by 8 inches.
Quick changeover is done by putting in a new label magazine and tooling.
