AGY Holding Corp. has developed a high-performance glass fiber for biomaterial composites used in dental and medical implants.
The new fiber, HPB, is suitable for implant applications of duration of more than 30 days. It is compatible with a range of thermoplastics, including polyetherether ketone, polyether imide and polyphenylene sulfide.
HPB has 40 percent higher tensile strength and 20 percent greater tensile modulus than ordinary E-glass fibers, according to the Aiken, S.C., firm. Applications include orthodontics and dental implants and potentially, orthopedics.
