Medford, Wis.-based Weather Shield Manufacturing Inc. is closing a 194-worker vinyl window fabrication plant in Greenwood, Wis.
The layoffs will begin in June and conclude in September, according to a Worker Adjustment Retaining Notification Act listing.
Weather Shield officials plan to retain the building, which the company owns, in hopes of a possible reopening should demand for vinyl windows justify it, said Sheila Nyberg, executive director of the Clark County Economic Development Corp., in a May 8 telephone interview.
Nyberg said Weather Shield plans to consolidate operations at its 600,000-square-foot facility in Mosinee, Wis.
Weather Shield officials did not return phone calls. The company is a division of SNE Enterprises Inc., a subsidiary of Mosinee-based Peachtree Cos.
The announcement came as a a surprise to local economic development officials because Weather Shield added capacity to the Greenwood plant last year. It is the third major economic hit in as many years for the county with only 32,000 people, Nyberg said.
