Reifenhauser GmbH & Co. KG Maschinenfabrik (Booth S40041) is promoting its twin-screw technology in the United States, after success in Europe. Key to its exhibit is a novel co-rotating twin-screw extruder and new developments in the blown and cast film areas.
The Reitruder RZE 58-inch extruder uses new construction elements. The geometry of the screws has been adapted to changing requirements by increasing the channel depth and redesigning the feed zone. Those features can improve the intake of PET flake and regrind and enlarge the dosing volume of fillers, a benefit in processing raw materials of inferior quality.
The Reitruder degassing system is improved and provides increased efficiency to handle raw materials with humidity of up to 0.5 percent. This minimizes pre-drying for energy and processing savings.
The Troisdorf, Germany, firm says the efficiency of its small twin screws can replace large single-screw extruders.
A Reitruder with a 70-millimeter screw diameter and a capacity of up to 1,200 kilograms per hour can be used as an alternative to a single-screw extruder with 150mm screw diameter and identical capacity, said Dieter Thewes, head of the extrusion division.
In Western Europe more than 2.2 billion pounds of PET bottles are ground annually. Since much of it is contaminated with labels, the material cannot be processed on single-screw extruders with conventional dryers.
Reifenhauser's push on twin screws in the U.S. follows sales in Europe. Features include high-performance processing of 5,060 pounds of PET flakes per hour and special dosing units that compensate for variations in the apparent density of the regrind. High-performance vacuum pumps remove residual moisture and impurities.
The firm says its trend in blown film is improved flexibility and customized products. Up-to-date developments in the heated and guiding sections allow production of barrier and polyolefin packaging films on a five-layer line. The multiple-layer capability can lead to cost savings and a wider range of products. The firm has tested the five-layer technology under production conditions and offers outputs from 660 pounds per hour to 1,320 pounds per hour.
Reifenhauser has formed an RQS division, for Reiifenhauser Quality Service, that includes engineers available at all times.
