Milliken Chemical, of Spartanburg, S.C., is well-known for its polypropylene clarifiers, but now it can be turned to for reinforcement additives.
At NPE2009 (Booth S54055), Milliken has debuted a reinforcing agent, Hyperform HPR-803, that it said delivers weight savings against traditional mineral-filled PP.
Johnny Netzloff, global marketing manager for Hyperform products, said a talc-filled PP automotive part has a typical 25-30 percent talc loading that can be replaced by a 10 percent Hyperform HPR-803 content.
Another benefit of the additive is a good surface finish compared with glass-reinforced materials.
Hyperform is an established Mil- liken range of nucleating agents, so this is a first move into reinforcement. But it's a natural technology extension, Netzloff said.
Brian Burkhart, Milliken's global market manager for PP clarifiers, said this defines the company's approach of making the three corners of the plastics triangle resin, additive and processing to work together. The company always builds from a base and the same is intended for the Hyperform reinforcing agent.
We like to get our foot in the door to see what the needs are, and then develop a platform for innovation, he said.
Another example of the approach is shown in Milliken's display of packaging and durable storage applications made with Millad NX8000-clarified PP.
Milliken said Millad NX8000 enables PP to achieve high clarity by reducing haze by 50 percent compared with the current industry standard.
Burkhart said surveys Milliken has conducted in the U.S. and China show consumers want greater clarity in PP items, for example household storage containers.
Milliken's additives are used in a range of other NPE exhibitors' demonstration applications. Perhaps the most eye-catching application, though, is a cutlery tray from Italian manufacturer Guzzini that was entered for the International Plastics Design Awards taking place at NPE.
The tray was originally made with styrene acrylonitrile, but Guzzini redesigned the product using clarified PP to reduce cost, boost impact resistance and enhance sustainability.
