Italian injection press maker Negri Bossi SpA has built a giant injection press, with 7,000 metric tons of clamping force, for a customer in Japan.
The press is Negri Bossi's largest-ever injection molding machine, beating out the previous-biggest, a 6,000-tonner, according to Liam Burns, general manager of Negri Bossi USA Inc.
Negri Bossi announced news of the whopper machine at NPE2009 in Chicago.
Burns said the company is not revealing the name of the customer. But he said the Milan-based machinery maker currently is shipping the press from its factory in Imola, Italy, to one of Japan's largest producers of shipping containers. The customer will use the containers to transport whole tuna fish.
The hybrid molding machine has two in-line injection units and an electric screw drive, Burns said.
In other big-press news, Negri Bossi recently delivered five 3,500-tonne injection presses to Italian automaker Fiat SpA. Negri Bossi supplied the injection presses, robots, mold-change systems, conveying equipment and an automated paint line.
