Chevis Watkinson, Wisconsin chapter chairman for the Industrial Designers Society of America, tells us that his group is organizing a few events for designers and others to learn more about plastics, by visiting two Midwestern plastics companies. On Aug. 20 at 6 p.m., the group plans to sponsor a tour of Northern Engraving Corp.'s headquarters plant in Sparta, Wis. Designers will see the nameplate manufacturing process -- Northern Engraving's specialty -- from beginning to end. The company has more than 100 years of experience decorating and forming metal and plastic. In October, the group is planning another factory tour, at Bemis Manufacturing Co. Improving relations and communication between designers and the plastics industry has long been a pet project for Robert Grace, our editor and associate publisher. These visits look to be a step in the right direction. Other processors might also be wise to open their doors and welcome in designers -- closer ties could have benefits to all the parties involved. If you're interested in attending the Northern Engraving open house, you can RSVP here.
