Brazilian blow molding machinery maker Pavan Zanetti Indústria Metalúrgica Ltda. drew interest at NPE2009 with a demonstration of container production using Dow Chemical Co.'s experimental bimodal high density polyethylene.
Bimodal HDPE resins have struggled to gain traction in North America despite widspread use in Europe, said Alan Radwanski, a Dow senior engineer.
Bimodal HDPEs are characterized by higher densities, increased rigidity and improved stress cracking resistance over unimodal grades. They can provide the opportunity to reduce container weight while maintaining top load performance.
The new XDMA 6630 resin is produced at Dow's St. Charles, La., plant, where bimodal polymers for film and pipe markets are made.
It is still in the development stage but we expect it to be fully commercial by the end of the year, Radwanski said.
