The Traismauer, Austria-based subsidiary of Bekum Maschinenfabrik GmbH filed for insolvency in regional court in Sankt Pölten, Austria, on July 21.
The Berlin-based firm, which makes blow bolding machines, has been hit hard by the automotive recession. The German plant specializes in packaging applications; the Austrian unit targeted automotive. Only the Austrian operations are included in the insolvency filing.
Insolvency administrator Alexander Klikovits must establish whether there is a chance of continuing the Austrian operations and retaining its 184 employees.
Plant manager Johannes Schwartz told the local Niederösterreichische Nachrichten newspaper that the crisis began in fall 2008 with a severe reduction in orders, even cancellations. We have been meanwhile trying to manage as long as possible, he said.
Bekum officials were not available for comment.
Bekum introduced a short-time work schedule in Traismauer in early 2009, later notifying 60 employees of impending layoffs.
