Milliken Chemical of Spartanburg, S.C., which is well-known for polypropylene clarifiers, is making reinforcing agents.
At NPE2009 in Chicago, Milliken debuted Hyperform HPR-803, a reinforcing agent that it said delivers weight savings against traditional mineral-filled PP. Johnny Netzloff, Hyperform global marketing manager, said a talc-filled PP auto part has a typical 25-30 percent talc loading that can be replaced by 10 percent HPR-803 content. Another benefit is good surface finish, the firm said.
Hyperform is an established Milliken range of nucleating agents, but this first move into reinforcement is a natural technology extension, Netzloff said.
Brian Burkhart, global market manager for PP clarifiers, said the new product defines the firm's approach of making resins, additives and processing work together. We like to get our foot in the door to see what the needs are, and then develop a platform for innovation, he said.
Milliken also showed packaging and durable storage applications made with Millad NX8000-clarified PP, which reduces haze by 50 percent, compared with current industry standards, the firm said.
