He began his career in the mid-1970s as an electronics design engineer for Bell-Northern Research in Ottawa, and worked from 1978-85 as a consultant to Canada's Department of National Defence in Ottawa, in the field of microelectronic computer technology. He also served for 13 years, till 2001, as chairman of the Canadian Standards Association committee on standards for patient ventilators and related technology.
