German biopolymer supplier FKuR Kunststoff GmbH has opened an office near Austin, Texas, to serve customers in the U.S. and Canada.
The Cedar Park operation, FKuR Plastics Corp. (the name is pronounced Ef-Cur), has one employee, but the office will add two more workers within 90 days.
We started a small marketing campaign. Business is good, said Steven Prindle, applications technology specialist, who joined the firm last year. We have several [customer] trials.
FKuR ships its bioplastic compounds to North America from its headquarters plant in Willich, Germany. But the company still has big goals, which it revealed last year at NPE2009 in Chicago.
Our goal still is to have a compounding facility and laboratory [in North America] by 2012. First we've got to get sales up, Prindle said Jan. 20 by phone.
FKuR picked Austin because it is centrally located and can easily serve customers on both coasts.
Other companies offer bioplastics, and business growth may depend on the cost of conventional plastic feedstocks. Prindle said the advantages of FKuR's products are that they are easy to process, and can be used as drop-in replacements for polyethylene or polypropylene.
The company also offers customer support through a partner FKuR was founded as a spinoff from Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT which does research in Oberhausen, Germany.
The firm offers injection molding and extrusion grades, and has had interest from packaging customers. Another market FKuR is pursuing is injection molding grades with wood fiber, to replace wood in auto applications.
