Contract manufacturer SMC Ltd. of Somerset, Wis., has added proprietary medical micromolding technology, including the capability for implantable devices.
SMC began exploring the expansion in mid-2008 and placed the technology in commercial use at its Somerset facility in July under the direction of Pat Kavanaugh, director of micro/miniature molding. Kavanaugh joined the firm in January 2008. He previously was an independent SMC collaborator.
The SMC manufacturing process delivers yields of at least 10,000 parts, or 10,000 shots per pound of virgin resin including the runner. For SMC, micromolding part sizes are 0.003 cubic inch or smaller, or 0.045 gram or less.
SMC occupies more than 500,000 square feet at seven locations in Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Ohio, California and India. The firm exhibited at Medical Design & Manufacturing West, Feb. 9-11 in Anaheim.
