Blue Water's Carl C. Haas dead at 62
NAPLES, FLA. Carl C. Haas, former president and CEO of injection molder Blue Water Plastics Inc., died Jan. 28 from bile duct liver cancer in Naples. He was 62.
He attended the University of Michigan, was a graduate of Wayne State University and was a certified public accountant. He joined his family's business, St. Clair, Mich.-based Blue Water, in 1978. He was named president and CEO in 1979 upon the death of his brother and father.
Haas led the company during a period of growth and global expansion. The family sold Blue Water to Sarnen, Switzerland-based Sarna Polymer Holding Inc. in July 2000, and he retired in 2002.
He was active in the Society of Plastic Industry Inc. and the Society of Plastic Engineers. In June, he was named citizen of the year by the St. Clair Rotarians for his service and dedication to the community.
Haas was an avid golfer and a loyal University of Michigan football fan.
Among others, he is survived by his wife, Beverly, and brother, John, who was Blue Water's vice president and chief operating officer.
United Silicone sales rep Keith Hillestad
LANCASTER, N.Y. Keith Hillestad, a longtime salesman at United Silicone Inc. of Lancaster, died Jan. 18, following a sudden illness. He was 62.
Hillestad spent more than 35 years in the field of decorating equipment and supplies, working at several companies. He became an independent manufacturers' representative for suppliers of the equipment when he came into contact with United Silicone.
He joined United Silicone full time in 1990. The following year, he moved from the Chicago area to Buffalo to become sales manager at the company. His most recent position was as a technical sales representative.
United Silicone makes decorating equipment and supplies for hot stamping, heat transfer and heat sealing of plastics.
During his career, Hillestad traveled around the world working with United Silicone's sister companies. He presented technical papers at Society of Plastics Engineers conferences, where he was active in the Decorating & Assembly Division.
