Polyscope Polymers BV is developing applications for styrene maleic anhydride compounds as a performance additive in amorphous thermoplastics.
The Geleen, Netherlands-based company said its Xiran SMA additives improve thermal performance, surface polarity and miscibility with other resins. It can boost performance and value of recycled and virgin resins such as ABS and polymethyl methacrylate. It is possible to improve the processing window and make it easier to paint, print on or plate such polymers, Polyscope said.
Xiran SMA's ratio of styrene-to-maleic anhydride can be adjusted per application.
The block copolymer is miscible in a range of polymers. It has a high glass transition temperature of 293°- 347° F, allowing it to increase thermal performance of some resins. With better thermal performance comes better dimensional stablity and tighter tolerances, Polyscope said.
