The top 10 plastic film producers and converters in Europe account for combined sales across the continent of 5.9 billion euros ($7.97 billion), according to a new report by European Plastics News.
Amcor Flexibles by far leads the ranking, with European film production and conversion worth an estimated 1.65 billion euros ($2.23 billion). Its flexibles production and conversion business has been significantly boosted by its acquisition late last year of parts of Alcan Packaging.
Second and third places go to firms with significant film conversion activities Spain's Armando Alvarez Group and Nordenia International of Germany. Even their combined European sales of nearly 1.4 billion euros ($1.89 billion) fall short of Amcor's figure.
British Polythene Industries plc takes fourth place with European business valued at 475 million euros ($641.8 million). BPI, however, is far less dependent on conversion revenues than the top three players. Germany's RKW is the only other firm in the top 10 to earn a large part of its European revenues from film production.
European firms dominate the top 10, with only Melbourne, Australia-based Amcor and the U.S.-based Cryovac-brand unit of Sealed Air Corp. based elsewhere. However, both have much larger businesses outside Europe than their European counterparts among the top 10, only Finland's Wihuri Packaging, the Netherlands' Clondalkin, and RKW of Germany have large-scale non-European operations.
Plastic Film Producers and Converters Data Report contains global sales and plastic film sales, and European plastic film sales for 30 top producers and converters. Those firms represent combined European film sales worth more than 10.1 billion euros ($13.7 billion). Each entry is supported with key contact information and a short profile of operations.
