Ineos Nova LLC has launched Clearblend a new entry to the firm's lineup of styrenic copolymers.
Clearblend is a clear, impact-modified styrene acrylic copolymer that's intended for injection molding applications. The material has been designed to provide a cost-effective balance of clarity and toughness, North American polymers Vice President Ed Barnes said in a May 3 news release.
Potential applications for Clearblend include housewares, drinkware, toys and device components, said officials with Channahon, Ill.-based Ineos Nova. The material is made without bisphenol A or phthalates.
Clearblend shares some similarities with Ineos Nova's Zylar and NAS styrenic copolymers, but the material is offered as a dry blend instead of as a fully compounded product, according to styrenic copolymer product manager Marty Spatz. As a result, the material is a lower-cost offering, Spatz said by phone May 11.
We're seeing a lot of growth [for Clearblend] in housewares because of the BPA issue, he added. It's another option for our customers to have.
Alleged health risks surrounding BPA commonly used as a feedstock in polycarbonate have led some plastics processors to seek out BPA-free materials. Clearblend and other styrenic copolymers made by Ineos Nova also can provide source reduction and lower energy consumption, officials added.
Clearblend is made at an Ineos Nova plant in Springfield, Mass. The firm a 50-50 joint venture between Ineos Group of Fribourg, Switzerland, and Nova Chemicals of Pittsburgh also makes solid polystyrene in Springfield, as well as at plants in Joliet, Ill.; Decatur, Ala.; and at four sites in Europe.
Ineos Nova ranks as North America's largest maker of solid PS, with a market share of 28 percent based on estimated annual capacities. The venture was initiated in Europe in 2005 and in 2007 was expanded to include the North American styrenic assets of both firms.
In 2009, Ineos Nova posted sales of about $2.4 billion, a decline of almost 40 percent vs. 2008. But the firm showed an operating profit of $8 million after registering an operating loss of more than $200 million the previous year.
