Terraloy compounds can be composted
Teknor Apex Co.'s Bioplastics Division has developed a starch/biodegradable copolyester blend for compostable applications.
Terraloy 20000 compounds have passed the ASTM D6400 test for plastics intended for composting in aerobic facilities, according to the Pawtucket, R.I., company. Thermoplastic starch content ranges up to 40 percent. Teknor Apex says the compounds are suited to replace polyolefins and polystyrene in end-uses such as carrier bags, can liners, trays and plates, cutlery and flower pots. The starch in the compounds is melt mixed with the copolyester to help retain key properties of the copolyester.
The process employed by Teknor Apex for intimately dispersing TPS within the host polymer makes it possible for plastics processors to do more with biodegradable copolyester, said Teknor Apex manager of strategic initiatives Edwin Tam. Thicker film, sheet and molded parts are possible because of faster decomposition rates.

MSP Green-3 system dehumidifies molds
MSP Technology LLC of Centerport, N.Y., showed its Green-3 technology for dehumidification.
Partner Walter Stark, who patented the technology and started the company in 2001, said the portable system can be used to dehumidify molds.
Multiple small-plate heat exchangers are linked to cooling coils for dehumidifying. Warm, humid air is distributed to heat exchangers for pre-cooling and initial dehumidification. Pre-cooled air then passes twice over conventional heating coils. Finally, the cool, dehumidified air is drawn back through the opposite side of the heat exchanger where it absorbs heat from incoming air.
The MSP system requires a smaller cooling coil and compressor than conventional equipment.

Cross-link polyamide targets special uses
TechnoCompound GmbH has developed cross-linkable polyamide for specialized markets.
The firm said its entire range of TechnoMids polyamides are available in radiation-induced cross-linkable grades.
Cross-linkable polyamides have high heat resistance and maintain tolerances during soldering. They also show high abrasion resistance and very good chemical, solvent and oil resistance.
TechnoCompound, of Bad Sobernheim, Germany, claims the cost to make finished product is competitive vs. standard high-heat performance thermoplastics. It said the polyamides can be run in standard tools, followed by electron beaming to effect cross-linking.

TPEI lab compounder processes small lots
Technical Process & Engineering Inc. of Lehighton, Pa., introduced a 1FRE laboratory compounding line in mid-May at Antec in Orlando, Fla.
Developed in response to customer requests for smaller lot sizes for high-cost material additives or new materials for testing samples the line can run trial sizes as small as 1 or 2 pounds, or as much as 50 pounds an hour.
In new fields of materials such as bioplastics and nanocomposites, many trials may be necessary to prove the property requirements of a new material, said Harold L. Schafer Jr., CEO at TPEI. Additives such as nanomaterials, biopolymers and medical-grade compounds can be very expensive, sometimes up to several hundred dollars per gram.
The 1FRE can be configured for strand or underwater pelletizing. Material also can be taken from the mixer discharge and molded into test plates. It can be plugged into a standard 240-volt outlet.

Acrylite suited for high-power lighting
Evonik Cyro LLC has introduced an acrylic with superior heat resistance, enhanced mechanical properties and exceptional surface hardness.
Acrylite hw55 is well-suited to injection molding of technical parts for high-powered lighting applications in automotive, marine, airport and medical lighting as well as in gauges and instrument panels.
The new polymer provides high light transmission and can withstand years of thermal stress in uses such as surgical lighting, street lamps and auto fiber optics. Acrylite hw55 has a heat-deflection temperature of 241° F at 264 pounds per square inch. Even after long-term exposure to heat, the polymer retains maximum transparency, said Parsippany, N.J.-based Evonic Cyro.
Other benefits are superior strength, scratch and break resistance, and processing in injection molding and extrusion with three-zone general-purpose screws.

Rotomolding can use DiamondKote agent
Franklynn Industries, an Illinois Tool Works Inc. unit, has developed a water-based mold release agent that is easy to apply in rotational molding.
DiamondKote W4066 is a semi-permanent agent for multiple de-molding cycles per application. It resists pre-release that can cause warping. Its good thermal stability minimizes white residue formation at high oven temperatures. Typical applications include storage tanks, industrial parts, housings, toys and sports equipment. The agent works well with aluminum and steel molds.
DiamondKote products are suited to resins such as low, medium and extra-low density polyethylene and nylon. They can handle large components and where tight geometries are involved. Water-based agents avoid safety issues that solvent-based agents can pose to the operator, said Franklynn in Loveland, Ohio.

DMA25 unit performs viscoelastic testing
Limonest, France-based Metravib, a maker of laboratory instruments for materials characterization, introduced a new dynamic mechanical analyzer, called the DMA25.
The DMA25 performs viscoelastic tests including glass transition determination, frequency sweep, creep and stress relaxation.
The unit has a force range of plus or minus 25 Newtons, which the firm said offers an excitation force three or four times higher than competing analyzers. That makes it possible to test nearly all types of materials and a large variety of specimen sizes.
