Rapid prototyping specialist 3D Systems Corp. is continuing its string of acquisitions by purchasing two European companies in the prototyping business: Provel srl of Turin, Italy, and Bits From Bytes Ltd. of Bristol, England.
Provel provides rapid prototyping, tooling and manufacturing services to Italian automotive and durable-goods manufacturers, according to an Oct. 12 news release from Rock Hill-based 3D Systems. Provel is to become part of 3Dproparts in Europe.
The U.S. firm launched 3Dproparts, a trademarked business it claims is the world's fastest-growing rapid prototyping and manufacturing parts service, in October 2009. Since then, it has expanded the service domestically and internationally through organic growth and several acquisitions, with Provel being the largest.
3D acquired all of Provel's outstanding shares primarily in a cash transaction with a portion paid in shares.
Bits From Bytes Ltd. makes three-dimensional printers and 3-D printer kits that print plastic parts from a variety of materials in multiple colors. The company serves educational, hobbyist and professional markets.
The firm's kits cost $1,300-$3,900 and print materials including ABS and polylactic acid. Bits From Bytes has gained a 17 percent share of the worldwide 3-D printer market in its first year of operation.
3D Systems said it plans to retain the entire Bits From Bytes management team and continue operations from the current Bristol facility.
