The city of San Clemente has banned the use of expanded polystyrene containers by restaurants, supermarkets, delicatessens and other retail food vendors, effective July 1.
The ban, passed unanimously Jan. 4 by a five-member city council, bans EPS trays, plates, bowls, lids, cartons, cups, hinged and lidded containers and other items designed for one-time use for prepared food, takeout food or leftover food. It does not apply to single-use disposable PS straws or utensils.
A similar ban in Hayward, Calif., will go into effect July 1. Three dozen California communities plus the cities of Portland, Seattle and Issaquah, Wash., have bans on PS takeout containers. Los Angeles and four California counties have PS bans at citywide facilities and events.
