Equipment maker Erema Engineering Recycling Maschinen und Anlagen GmbH of Ansfelden, Austria, said its Vacurema recycling systems now can produce food packaging containers made up of 100 percent recycled PET even if temperatures rise above 250°F during the heating process.
Erema said it does not matter if the packaging is heated in a microwave or conventional oven.
Erema said that is possible because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Vacurema for Category J. The system already has FDA approval for Categories C to H.
Two independent testing groups, Fraunhofer Institute and Keller and Heckman LLP, have confirmed the recycled PET application for Vacurema.
The company's U.S. unit, Erema North America Inc., is in Ipswich, Mass.
