Thermoformer Republic Plastics LP is planning to begin manufacturing operations at its recently acquired plant near its existing Knox- ville, Tenn., site later this year.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reported Jan. 11 that Plastics Management LLC, a division of McQueeney, Texas-based Republic, paid $3.55 million for the 98,000-square-foot building, which formerly belonged to vehicle transmissions manufacturer Trans- mission Technologies Corp.
Company officials were unavailable for comment. According to the newspaper, Chief Operating Officer Doug Ross said Republic initially will use the facility for warehouse space, but is hoping to begin manufacturing operations by the second quarter.
Republic in September acquired an 85,000-square-foot facility in Eloy, Ariz., that was previously owned by Plastic Tech- nology Inc., a subsidiary of North Carolina-based Hickory Springs Manufacturing Co.
According to Eloy officials, that plant was to replace a Republic facility in nearby San Manuel, Ariz., that burned down in March. The cause of the fire, in which two employees suffered inhalation burns, was never determined.
Republic thermoforms packaging and distributes private-label foam products for the retail and institutional food-service tableware markets.
