You've heard of “Angry Birds”? Well, Plastic Technologies Inc. has its own free iPhone/iPad app for your inner geek: It calculates the final intrinsic viscosity for PET resin.
Holland, Ohio-based PTI said the application is the first of its kind for the plastics packaging industry.
Intrinsic viscosity, or IV, has a major impact on how PET resin will be processed. After resin arrives at a processor's factory, it typically gets dried to remove as much moisture as possible before being used to create preforms and bottles. The resin manufacturer has indicated what the ideal processing IV should be, but since PET resin absorbs moisture, it has to be dried before processing.
“Without knowing the actual IV, you run the risk of creating packaging that doesn't meet performance specifications,” said Scott Steele, Plastic Technologies' vice president of global analytical labs, training and enterprise projects.
