Congratulations are in order once again this year for custom injection molder Plastikos Inc., which has been named to the 2011 Employer Honor Roll Awards by the state of Pennsylvania's Department of Public Welfare. Earlier this year, Erie, Pa.-based Plastikos was Plastics News' Processor of the Year. The state award distinguishes employers that best demonstrate a unique commitment to employment and training programs. Only three companies received the honor this year. Plastikos was nominated by PA CareerLink, GECAC (Greater Erie Community Action Committee), as well as the St. Benedict Education Center. The company has worked with all three employment agencies. The company also partnered with St. Benedict to employ refugees from Nepal, Haiti, Kenya, Sudan, and Bhutan, among others. Susan Henry, human resources manager at Plastikos, led the initiative to hire 16 refugees over the last year. Each of the refugees progresses through an extensive orientation and internal training program. As part of this initiative, Plastikos no longer utilizes temporary staffing services. According to the company, its annual turnover has decreased dramatically since it began collaborating with St. Benedict, PA CareerLink, and GECAC.
