New York-based magazine publisher and brand-management firm Sandow Media Corp. has purchased global materials consultancy Material ConneXion Inc. and a related design-management firm, Culture & Commerce Inc.
Sandow publishes magazines in the interior design, home, cosmetics and luxury-goods markets, The acquisition will boost Sandow's position in the design industry and expand Material ConneXion's offerings, particularly globally, the companies said.
The June 1 acquisition comes a week after New York-based Material ConneXion, which provides research and consulting on sustainable materials choices, announced it will open 10 offices in China, starting with Beijing in October, in partnership with a Chinese cultural promotion firm.
Material ConneXion — founded by entrepreneur George Beylerian in 1997 — plans to open offices in Shanghai in March and in Guangzhou in the third quarter of 2012, with the others in place by 2017. Beyond its Manhattan headquarters, the consultancy already operates design centers and materials libraries in Milan; Cologne, Germany; Bangkok; and Daegu, South Korea.
Michele Caniato will remain president of both Material ConneXion and Culture & Commerce.
Sandow said it wants to expand Material ConneXion's plans to open materials libraries with universities around the world, and invest “substantial funds in new technologies.”
“The acquisition of Material ConneXion and Culture & Commerce is a pivotal step for us” and will “greatly magnify our business connections and international reach,” said Adam Sandow, chairman and CEO.
The China expansion is in partnership with Chinese firm Eegoo Cultural Industry Investment Co. Ltd., a network of designers and museums that employs more than 1,000 people in New York, London, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, and Nanchang, China.
