SCHWAIG, GERMANY (July 18, 1:10 p.m. ET) — Becton, Dickinson and Co. has purchased two El-Exis injection molding machines from Sumitomo (SHI) Demag Plastics Machinery GmbH to expand its production of petri dishes.
Becton, Dickinson is switching its production from an eight-plus-eight-cavity stack mold to a 16-plus 16-cavity stack mold. The new injection presses and automation gives a shorter cycle time with twice as much output.
French mold maker Plastisud SA made the new stack mold. A high-speed Hekuma side-entry robot removes parts and does bagging and boxing.
In other news, Sumitomo Demag reports its plant in Wiehe, Germany, is operating at a high level of capacity utilization. By the end of April, the small-press factory had double the order intake from the year-before level.
Playmobil toy maker Georbra Brandstätter GmbH & Co. KG bought 50 more Systec presses, all with a clamping force of 50 metric tons. That follows a previously reported order of 30 Systecs the company made last fall.
Sumitomo Demag also reports strong order activity from emerging markets such as China, Mexico and Turkey, as well as from established markets of North America, southeast Asia and Eruope. One big reason: The Wiehe plant is the center for Sumitomo Demag's all-electric press production.
The machinery maker is based in Schwaig, Germany.
