Linear stretch blow molding technology from Siapi srl is being used to mold a 4-liter PET keg for Amstel beer — called Amstel Tapje — which hit the market in Europe in April.
The plastic beer keg fits into a home refrigerator. It has a built-in tapping and dispensing system.
Siapi, a machinery maker based in San Vendemiano, Italy, contributed the know-how to create colored preforms by heating the container body while at the same time cooling the neck.
Siapi has a U.S. subsidiary in Norcross, Ga., Siapi America Inc.
The company specializes in machinery for PET beer kegs ranging from 4-40 liters, designed to replace traditional steel kegs. Barrier materials must protect against oxygen and ultraviolet light, while keeping in carbon dioxide.
According to Siapi, the package must guarantee beef shelf life of at least six months.
