LOWELL, MASS. (Sept. 9, 12 p.m. ET) — Konarka Technologies Inc. will work with ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG to develop steel roofs with integrated photovoltaics. The products will use Lowell-based Konarka's Power Plastic, a flexible material that converts light to electricity.
Konarka's material will be applied to ThyssenKrupp's steel substrate in a continuous process.
“Unlike conventional silicon-based photovoltaic systems, the joint solar solution will not need to be mounted on a raised structure but will integrate smoothly into the building envelope,” said Lars Pfeiffer, head of quality and development at the ThyssenKrupp's color/construction unit, in a news release.
Konarka's Power Plastic can also be applied to glass, film and textile substrates.
