Plastic Molding Technology Inc. of El Paso, Texas, has invested nearly $1.1 million in equipment over the past 10 months.
PMT added capacity and modernized its mold-repair facility, quality laboratory and molding floor.
The precision molder acquired five all-electric Milacron Roboshot S2000i injection molding presses with 72-180 tons of clamping force. Three went into service in July and two in August, said CEO Charles Sholtis.
PMT now operates 56 horizontal presses ranging from 22-500 tons and seven insert molding machines of 40-150 tons. The company employs 87.
PMT also added a Wenzel LH-model coordinate-measuring machine that uses a touch-probe system. Wenzel America Ltd. of Wixom, Mich., formerly operating as Xspect Solutions Inc., supplied the German-made CMM.
The CMM enables PMT to provide all first-article layout inspections for the production part approval process, in-house, Sholtis said.
New auxiliary equipment includes Novatec vacuum loaders and NovaDrier-series dryers, Advantage Sentra mold heaters, HyRobotics sprue pickers and Gorbel overhead crane systems.
Automotive parts such as insert molded connectors and gears, and overmolded cosmetic-critical components account for about 50 percent of PMT's business. Another 30 percent involves electrical products such as fuse components and current-carrying devices. Low-voltage electronic devices such as computer connectors represent 15 percent.
“Fifty customers make up 90 percent of our sales,” Sholtis said, “and 80 percent of our output goes to Mexico” primarily for automotive assembly operations.
Since 2006, PMT has exported small precision parts to China for a European company doing automotive assembly there.
In early 2010, PMT extended its lease and began using an additional 20,000 square feet of space, bringing its plant size to 60,000 square feet. In response to customer requests, PMT started El Paso operations in 2004 after three decades in the Northeast.
For the fiscal year ending Oct. 31, Sholtis projects sales of $13 million, after recording $12.1 million in the previous year.
