SINGAPORE (Oct. 10, 12:50 p.m. ET) — A senior executive at DSM NV's Dyneema high-performance fiber unit said the scope of adding new products across the globe — and especially in Asia — will cushion off any impact of the threat of a global double-dip recession.
"We see growth potential globally with an increasing demand for strong lightweight applications and there is significant untapped potential and traditional materials to be replaced," Marco Kleuters, vice president of DSM Dyneema Life Protection Asia Pacific (APAC), told reporters after the company broke ground on Oct. 6 for its innovation center in Singapore.
He pointed out that DSM Dyneema at any moment in time has 20-30 patent applications. The company already has 500 patents and patent applications worldwide.
The S$10 million technical center will house Asia's first independent ballistic testing center as well as the company's Asia Pacific (APAC) Life Protection headquarters. The center will include two ballistic testing ranges as well as high tech equipment and testing labs where technicians will be able to conduct comprehensive tests on personal and vehicle protection applications.
Dyneema already has innovation centers in the Netherlands and the United States. Dyneema makes high-performance polyethylene fiber used in personal security and military applications.
