Charter Plastics Inc., a polyethylene pipe extruder in Titusville, Pa., has installed Inoex GmbH's ultrasonic Aurex ERS online quality control equipment.
Aurex uses a series of fixed sensors to continuously measure the pipe in both the lengthwise direction and over the complete circumference. The system measures diameter, wall thickness, overality and consistency. Puller speed controls the wall thickness.
Various pipe diameters and dimensions are produced on the same extrusion line—making size changes and consistent quality control a complex issue, according to Inoex. The ultrasonic sensors can be adjusted to measure pipe diameters ranging from 6 inches to 26.5 inches.
The Inoex Saveomat conveying and gravimetric system measures and levels out all variations in material, by controlling the output of pounds of resin produced per foot of pipe. Saveomat is used in combination with Aurex, automatically calibrating the ultrasonic signals.
Working together, the gravimetric system controls a constant pipe weight and the ultrasonic system controls the wall thickness and pipe dimension.
Inoex is based in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany. Its U.S. operation in Lancaster, Pa., is Inoex LLC.
