NEENAH, WIS. (Oct. 14, 2:10 p.m. ET) — Curwood Inc. is closing its Oshkosh, Wis., tape plant, laying off 23 workers, according to a notice filed Oct. 12 with a state agency.
Sewing thread and pulling tapes were among products made at the Oshkosh plant, spokeswoman Kristi Pavletich said in an Oct .14 telephone interview.
Curwood is a subsidiary of Neenah-based Bemis Co. Inc. Curwood's products are supplied to the retail, bulk, industrial and foodservice markets.
“This was a product line that Bemis analyzed, and we determined that it would require us to invest a substantial amount to remain competitive in the market. Bemis made the decision not to invest in that product line,” Pavletich said.
In the notice to the Wisconsin, Department of Workforce Development, the Oshkosh-based film and sheet plant said the closing would occur around Dec. 31.
Bemis had owned the plant since 1964, Pavletich said, and is determining options for the property. The company is working with outplacement services for the affected employees, she said.
