The Western Plastics Association continues to broaden its base and is conducting a grass-roots effort to become the voice of the plastics industry in the West.
“People want value,” said John Picciuto, who took office Sept. 1 for a one-year term as WPA president. He is western market manager in Tustin, Calif., with compounder H. Muehlstein & Co. Inc.
WPA seeks to broaden its base across all plastics processes as it transitions from its decades-long legacy as the California Film Extruders and Converters Association. The core WPA region includes California, Oregon, Wash- ington and British Columbia.
Picciuto and others have met with small groups of molders to “find out what people want,” he said. “We want to be a servant to the membership.”
To that effort, WPA held side meetings during the Sept. 26-28 Pack Expo event in Las Vegas.
Also, a New York firm is creating a video for WPA that, in part, attempts to repair plastics' image. “We feel environmentalists have damaged plastics,” Picciuto said in an Oct. 4 interview in Norwalk. “We want to point to the science and benefits of plastics.”
New WPA members include Westlake Chemical Corp. of Houston, which produces petrochemicals, polyethylene, vinyl, and extruded PVC pipe and profiles, among other products; Temkin International Inc., a Payson, Utah, maker of flexible plastic packaging including film, bags, stand-up pouches and thermoformed containers; and recycler Rainier Plastics Inc. of Yakima, Wash. Other new members include a staffing services firm, an ink maker, a paper converting equipment maker, a packaging pre-press and design firm and a transportation management company.
WPA officers serving additional terms are Vice President Kevin Kelly, CEO of Emerald Packaging Inc. in Union City, Calif.; Secretary Chandler Hadraba, managing director of Bradley Packaging Systems of Santa Monica, Calif.; and Treasurer Michael Hailfinger, national technical sales representative with INX International Ink Co. in Santa Fe Springs, Calif.
Laurie Hansen in Sacramento, Calif., is WPA executive director.
