ANKENY, IOWA (Nov. 11, 1:25 p.m. ET) — Micromolding specialist Accu-Mold LLC recently unveiled a $7 million, 44,000-square-foot addition to its Ankeny, Iowa, facility that will add 43 jobs to its payroll.
“What we've done is mostly in manufacturing. We not only doubled our size, but we tripled our production capability,” President and CEO Roger Hargens said Nov. 10 by telephone.
The company does micromolding for medical, fiber-optic, electronics, automotive and military applications. It was feted by Gov. Terry Branstad and state and local officials at a Nov. 9 ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“Accu-Mold is a home-grown Iowa success story. I'm proud of the role that the state of Iowa has played in Accu-Mold's success but it pales in comparison to what its employees have done,” Branstad said.
The state contributed $100,000 in training funds and is offering more than $800,000 in tax credits, while the city of Ankeny is adding $1.3 million in rebates and tax abatements over the next 10 years.
The company, which started in 1985, boosted the size of its facility from 38,000 square feet to 82,000 square feet and still has plenty of space for growth. It now has 160 employees and operates 24 hours, seven days a week.
Using its 25-year-old check itMicro-Mold technology, Hargens said the company makes tools and parts that are measured in microns — or less. It does its own tooling and builds specialized molding machines.
Accu-Mold already had Class 100,000 clean rooms, but the new space is largely Class 10,000 and typically the type of space used for medical and fiber-optic work.
He said that the addition is “high-tech and environmentally friendly.” The addition also contains a high-efficiency chilling system.
Hargens did not disclose sales figures but noted “every year has been a record year and we look at sales to continually grow.”
He said the firm ships worldwide and more than 60 percent of its business is outside the U.S.
Accu-Mold has also started a campaign to increase its visibility, taking part in about 12 trade shows a year, presenting white papers and building a new website.
