PORTLAND, ORE. (Nov. 29, 12:15 p.m. ET) — A petition calling for a plastic water bottle ban at the Grand Canyon has received more than 90,000 signatures on Change.org.
Stiv Wilson, a Portland area-based activist on marine plastic pollution, started the petition after finding out that the National Park Service had tabled its plan to ban plastic water bottles in the Grand Canyon after discussions with Coca-Cola Co., a major donor.
The ban was only two weeks away from implementation before it was halted.
“The National Park Service has a responsibility to keep the park free from litter, not to keep mega-corporations like Coca-Cola happy,” Wilson said in a news release. “The Grand Canyon belongs to all of us, and banning plastic bottles is the single best way to keep plastic waste from polluting the Grand Canyon and our oceans.”
