DETROIT (Dec. 8, 2 p.m. ET) — The Detroit section of the Society of Plastics Engineers will donate 30,000 toy buses to Detroit area charities on Dec. 9, continuing a holiday tradition first launched in 2000.
American Plastic Toys Inc. of Walled Lake, Mich., donates press time to make the buses, which is decorated to mimic SPE's Plastivan mobile teaching unit. LyondellBasell Industries donated 12,000 pounds of resin and Troy, Mich.-based Maple Press provides the decorative stickers for the buses. Trucking firm E.L. Hollingsworth Co. of Flint, Mich., provides transportation for the buses.
Since beginning the toy donation program, SPE has given away more than 360,000 buses. This year, the toys will be distributed by the Lions Club, the Michigan Association of United Ways and the Detroit Rescue Mission.
