Plastics Color Corp. has developed a non-brominated flame retardant system for polypropylene.
The Calumet City, Ill., company's FlamaSol FR is based on synthesized, mineral-based additives.
“FlamaSol FR contains no decabromo or antimony, two harmful chemicals, yet demonstrates better extinguishing results than our previous flame retardant,” says Plastics Color development engineer David Witt. Both of the chemicals are being phased out, according to Witt.
Plastics Color claims the new product is well suited to construction applications, warehouse parts, personal electronic equipment and other uses where extreme heat might cause ignition.
FlamaSol FR exceeds testing standards of UL94 and ANSI 4996 for plastic pallets, according to the concentrates and masterbatches producer. It may be injection and blow molded and processed by extrusion. It is available in white, black, natural , and custom-colored masterbatches.
Plastic Color says it also is working on a FlamaSol system for polyethylene.
