Toshiba Machine America is rolling out its THL series of Scara robots, a low-cost robot made with a lightweight, die-cast aluminum arm, and less-complex gearboxes and motors that are easier to maintain.
THL robots are 50 percent lighter than existing Toshiba Scara robots. Scara's are compact robots that pick up a part, then spin quickly and move it to another location.
The company points out that a lighter robot can cut costs for system integrators, because the THL series requires minimal supporting and vibration-suppression elements. It also uses half as much power as conventional robots.
Toshiba introduced the THL series, which comes in three sizes, at the International Robot Exhibition in Tokyo in November.
Toshiba Machine America is based in Elk Grove Village, Ill.
