Bayer MaterialScience LLLC has launched a new grade of polycarbonate to help consumers make the switch from incandescent lights to light-emitting diodes.
Makrolon TC8030 is a thermally conductive polycarbonate targeted for use in LED heat sinks for replacement lamps or next-generation luminaires. Compared with conventional aluminum heat sinks, the new PC grade offers similar thermal performance but cuts costs and enhances design freedom. Injection molding PC components eliminates assembly steps and allows creating new shapes and using in-mold decoration.
“Bayer is working continuously to provide innovative materials for lighting applications,” states Kevin Dunay, market segment leader for electrical/electronic polycarbonates at Bayer MaterialScience, in a news release.
The new grade has a preliminary UL 94 flame class rating of V-O at 2.5 millimeters and an official UL listing is expected by the end of March 2012. It is currently available in black.
