Materials firms from around the world will be heading to Orlando, Fla., in the first week of April for NPE2012. Here's what they'll be showing.
A. Schulman Inc. (Booth 15000): Schulamid-brand nylon materials for fluid-management systems and other applications provide high dimensional stability, chemical resistance, salt corrosion resistance, cold-temperature impact resistance and high-heat resistance for optimal performance. The materials are commercially viable alternatives to nylon 6/10, 6/11 and 6/12, according to the company. Also available, compounds optimized for fuel- and brake-system components, for applications including extruded polymer-coated metal tubing and injection molded connectors.
Alliance Polymers & Services LLC (Booth 57020): Maxelast-brand thermoplastic elastomers and Elastollan-brand thermoplastic polyurethane. Maxelast C is a line of ultraclear TPEs for products ranging from soft gel insoles to health and exercise equipment. Alliance officials said Maxelast can replace vulcanized rubber and ethylene propylene diene monomer. Elastollan's HPM series — supplied by BASF Corp. — is formulated for use in hybrid and electric vehicles. Another new series is aimed at handles and other interior auto parts.
Americhem Inc. (Booth 39021): New nShield antimicrobial additive masterbatches, which inhibit growth of odor-causing bacteria in fabrics and plastic materials. Also, iCon engineered color concentrates for synthetic fibers and plastics, which are more concentrated than similar materials. Americhem will debut its consumer color trends for 2012-14 — to aid in the design of various consumer products.
Asahi Kasei Plastics North America Inc. (Booth 33013): New grades of Xyron-brand modified polyphenylene ether for solar-panel components and new grades of Leona-brand nylon 6/6 and 6/6/6 compounds with long-glass fibers for high-performance applications. Also, new grades of Tenac acetal and Thermylene glass-reinforced polypropylene compounds; both materials are aimed at the automotive market.
Bluestar Engineering Plastics (Booth 23051): China-based Bluestar to launch eco-friendly, flame-retardant grades of glass-filled polybutylene terephthalate resins. The halogen-free PBTs already are being used by Foxconn International Holdings, a producer of Apple iPads and similar products. Bluestar is exhibiting with Nantong Xingchen Synthetic Material Co. Ltd.
DuPont Co. (Booth 35013): Recent commercial developments in plastics, packaging, polymer modifiers and bio-based ingredients businesses designed to stimulate new ideas. Soft-N-Safe bio-based plasticizer for PVC, from DuPont's polymer additives business, combines environmental responsibility with safe chemistry. Also, a fully food-grade-approved anti-stat replacement for ethoxylated amines for PP films.
Polymer modifiers for improving performance, sustainability and cutting costs, such as Elvaloy resins used as a reinforcement and thermal insulator for high-quality, low-cost housing built by Repshel in Mexico. Fusabond modifiers make dissimilar polymers compatible and bond in closed-loop recycling for agrochemical multilayer bottles in Brazil.
Other new applications: Zytel RS-brand nylon in Fiat biodiesel fuel lines, Sorona EP-brand biopolymer used in Toyota air-conditioning louvers and Hytrel-brand TPEs used in lightweight prosthetic feet that aid amputees in mobility and stability.
Elastocon TPE Technologies Inc. (Booth 57021): New natural and black TPEs for rigorous applications such as auto interiors, sound/vibration dampening pads and medical instrument grips.
Kraiburg TPE GmbH & Co. KG (Booth 61027): New compounds made with Thermolast W-brand wet-grip technology give TPE materials optimum grip even in the presence of moisture, for various consumer, industrial and medical applications. Also, newly introduced Polar Alloy blends, an important development in the area of haptics with increased abrasion resistance, minimal creep, and ease of coloring vs. silicone and vulcanizate blends, according to the company.
Plastics Color Corp. (Booth 43035): Flamasol FR, a new flame-retardant system for PP compounds that contains no decabrome — a chemical ingredient being phased out at the end of 2012. Flamasol FR can be used in construction materials, personal electronic equipment and other applications where flammability or ignition is a concern. Available in white, black, natural forms and custom formulations.
PolyOne Corp. (Booth 39006): New technology for in-mold decorating involving Geon FX-brand PVC compounds, for a metallic look. ReFlex 100 bioplasticizer, developed by PolyOne and Archer Daniels Midland, to replace phthalate plasticizers across a range of applications. Materials for the auto market, including OnColor FX special-effect color concentrates and OnFlex TPEs. Also, ColorMatrix's HyGuard-brand oxygen-barrier technology for PET packaging that offers full recyclability and controllable shelf-life management.
Purac (Booth 54048): Improved, heat-resistant grade of polylactic acid resin, for use in injection molding, extrusion and fiber production. Other applications include film and foam.
Sabic Innovative Plastics LP (Booth 29000): Maker of Lexan polycarbonate and other engineering resins will showcase “tailored material solutions and portfolio breadth” in key markets such as automotive, consumer, energy, infrastructure, health care and transportation. Sabic will host a series of technical seminars to illustrate technology and innovation capabilities.
Teknor Apex Co. (Booth 58038): Bioplastics Division to showcase a range of biopolymer-based compounds, including Terraloy-brand high-heat, high-impact PLA bioplastic compounds for use in injection molding and extrusion. New wet-grip compounds from the thermoplastic elastomers unit. Also, BioVinyl-brand phthalate-free PVC compounds made with Ecolibrium bio-based plasticizers supplied by Dow Chemical Co., with exclusive rights to market flexible PVC compounds using Ecolibrium in North America. Compounds using the plasticizers, which are based on renewable resources, will target markets including wire and cable.
