LONDON (Feb. 29, 12:25 p.m. ET) — When Lebron James, Kobe Bryant and Co. hit the courts to represent the U.S. during the 2012 London Olympics, they'll be sporting uniforms made from recycled PET.
Nike recently announced that Team USA's jersey will be made with 96 percent recycled polyester, according to Nike's website. The Nike Hyper Elite Basketball uniform is made by using an average of 22 bottles per uniform, the company said. The basketball shorts feature 100 percent recycled polyester.
Using recycled PET produces a jersey with superior performance and reduces energy consumption by an estimated 30 percent compared to using virgin polyester, Nike said.
