ROSEMONT, ILL. (April 23, 2:35 p.m. ET) — Medical packaging custom thermoformer Prent Corp. is one of three companies in the medical device category that have been chosen by the Institute of Packaging Professionals to receive the 2012 Ameristar Award for innovative packaging design.
The design developed by Prent for a urological product from Cook Medical Inc. reduces the amount of time that is needed to deliver life-saving procedures to a hemorrhaging patient as the tray and retainer design allows physicians, assistants and other medical personnel to simultaneously begin using different parts of the device.
For example, while one assistant is starting the intravenous prep using the retainer components, a physician can simultaneously start another procedure using the tray components, said Prent in a news release announcing that it had won an Ameristar award for the 15th time in the last 20 years.
The Prent design also allows the packaging to be used as a universal retainer for devices of various lengths, thus reducing per package costs associated with material purchasing, designing, tool milling, thermoforming, warehousing and shipping multiple retainers.
The workhorse element of the package, said Prent, is the retainer whose multi-combination of innovative forms and features provides cost-savings and enhanced product usability. In addition, because the retainer and tray are stacked, the package uses less shelf space.
The design also prevents lengthy tubing from tangling, Prent said.
The two other winners in the medical device category were TEQ, based in Huntley, Ill., for a package it developed for the Thoratec HM2 HeartMate tray set, and Sealed Air Corp. for its packaging design for Harvest Technologies' SmartPrep2/BMAC2, which is used to for concentrating stem cells from bone marrow aspirate.
The Harvest BMAC 2 Series used with the SmartPReP 2 technology platform, eliminates the need for autograft by efficiently concentrating and recovering regenerative cells while retaining their cellular viability and proliferative potential.
Altogether IOPP will present 32 Ameristar awards in 18 categories — plus six student awards — at the award ceremony May 22 in Rosemont, Ill., outside of Chicago.
