SHANGHAI (April 24, 11:05 p.m. ET) — Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd. is speeding up molding for caps and closures by eliminating the need to open and close the mold.
With its new HyCAPHigh Performance Package System, introduced at Chinaplas in Shanghai April 18-21, the company combined its existing capabilities in making high speed presses with tooling capabilities acquired with it purchased KTW Group in 2011.
The result is a system capable of a 1.85-second cycle time using a 72-cavity mold for a water bottle closure.
"The traditional has always been to open the mold, eject the part and close the mold," said Mike Flood, product manager closures business development. "But how would you make it if you weren't just thinking about the machine or the mold?"
Husky is not disclosing many details of the process at this time, but the HyCap HPP does not require the mold to open and close, instead using a proprietary internal ejection system. That cuts production time by no longer requiring time to open and close the mold.
The cycle time is 20 percent faster than its nearest competitor and uses 20 percent less energy.
Flood points out that the HyCAP HPP is not just a concept machine. Husky is ready to sell the system, and it operated continuously at Chinaplas without a hitch, he said.
"This is not a novelty," he said. "We've had zero stoppages."
The machine also incorporates a variety of other features to improve on ease-of-use, which should make it an less complex complete system to install in a new facility with a new workforce, as well as a low-maintenance machine in an existing plant.
"We've got customers in mature markets and in emerging markets who need a high volume, high speed process," he said.
