SHANGHAI (May 1, 3:20 p.m. ET) — South Korea's SK Chemicals touted its self-developed BPA-free copolyester resin at Chinaplas 2012 in Shanghai, hoping to gain some momentum with Chinese consumers that are willing to pay a premium for better materials.
The Ecozen-branded material is 20 percent bio-based, offers attractive mechanical properties, chemical resistance and heat resistance, and requires low processing temperature and reduced cycle time, said Jennie Hu, area manager with SK Chemical's Shanghai office.
Ecozen was launched in 2011 and currently runs two production lines in Korea, she added.
The Ecozen Y series targets injection molding applications for housewares, food contact products, appliances and automotive. The company showcased a variety of final products that use the Ecozen materials at its Chinaplas booth, including Lock & Lock containers and a front-load LG washer whose door panel is made of Ecozen, instead of glass.
Hu said the material is price competitive, compared to similar materials in the market. Eastman Chemicals has been offering its Tritan-branded BPA-free copolyester since 2008 and made a debut in China at last year's Chinaplas.
Seoul-based SK Chemicals has offices in Shanghai and Guangzhou.
