José del Cueto Gracia, an industrial engineer and company director, was elected president of Mexico's plastics industry association, Anipac, on April 17.
He replaces Eduardo Martínez Hernández, who has served as president of the Asociación Nacional de Industrias del Plástico AC since April 2010.
Del Cueto is a director of Carredana de Empaques SA de CV of Lerma, which supplies departmental stores, supermarkets and other retail outlets with polyethylene film and packaging.
Del Cueto said he will continue to promote the sustainability and recycling of plastic with Mexico's authorities at federal, state and municipal levels.
One of Martínez's most important achievements as association president was to convince government and legislators in Mexico City to take recycling seriously. During his presidency, Anipac persuaded the capital's lawmakers to reverse a ban on plastic bag use by retailers.
Del Cueto said he will fight to get the government to ban unfair imports of plastic products and to increase Mexico's plastic exports by taking advantage of the country's free-trade agreements with almost four-dozen countries.
Anipac said Mexico's plastics sector comprises about 4,200 companies, processed about 13.7 billion pounds of plastic and saw $20 billion worth of sales in 2011.
